Waiting for Summer.

To be honest, there's only two things I like about winter, skiing and Christmas. I hate being cold, I would take a ridiculously hot stuffy room over a cold room any day.  I often wear summer clothing in winter, like sundresses and flip-flops, with hopes that the weather gods will let up on the freezing Utah climate. I love spending my time outside, playing with my little brother or just laying in the grass, but until then, I'm in a process of waiting. Waiting for the sizzling summer days, luminous colors and succulent fruit.

Summer nights have to be my favorite part of summer, because they're not just a noun or an idea, they're a feeling, an intoxicating whirling daze that dissolves to quickly, like a puff of pink cotton candy. At times, I feel like there's a palpable purring drifting in the air during the night, even if it's just an invisible thought in my mind.  I have my own special place just to enjoy that thought, a roof used for eating gooey melted ice cream and gazing at the stars.

Music is another summer medium, a lot of times a song will remind me of the season i first listened to a particular song in, this happens most during the hottest season. Some songs are like a three or four minute time machine, taking me back to vivid memories.

I feel like this song is a good example of reminiscing summer. Whenever I hear this song I remember dancing in the car with my cousin, the radio pumped to the maximum volume and the uncomfortable expression on my step mothers face.

So until May 24, I'll be here, anticipating swimsuit season, sunglasses and crisp invigorating sunsets.

Self Portrait Poem

Kenzie
Indecisive, shocking, picky and complex.
Sister to Wyatt, daughter of Karen.
Lover of fate, future and freedom.
Who feels emptiness, hunger and defeat.
Who needs warmth, the horizon moon and your smile
Who fears depression, failure and embarrassment.
Who gives expression, tears and laughter.
Who would like to see splendor, lighting stars and your hand in mine.
Who lives in a secret corner built of mirrors and filled with boxes.

The scary side of life. (Personal Blog #1)

When i was five or six, my mother would watch television shows like C.S.I. and Cold Cases. I reluctantly watched these shows with her, though they always gave me anxiety filled thoughts, especially around bedtime. But somehow I slowly became addicted to learning about the esoteric piece of the human mind. Something in my brain clicked, making disturbing crime scenes a fascinating puzzle, leaving me searching for even more gruesome stories. So, at the age of ten, I watched my first horror movie, The Grudge.  I chose this movie because the cover image had plagued my thoughts, sticking like a sticky note in mind. It took me at least a week to muster up the courage to watch it. When I finally did, i watched it alone and I was terrified at night for weeks, but being scared produced an adrenaline rush.  Ever since then I've loved scary movies that push my limits and create that unbeatable rush.

In the last few years I've come to like following scripted television shows, so I was excited to see the combination of horror and scripted television in the American Horror Story trailer. It turned out to be just that, this perfect combination that ignored boundaries and left me asking, how did they even come up with that? Ryan Murphy, the creator of the show, fabricated this dark, unimaginable world which followed very little rules and left a bitter sweet after taste.

After watching American Horror Story, a yearning for a unique creepiness in other areas of my life grew. And I found that in Ralph Eugene Meatyard, a photographer who died in 1972. Meatyard's pictures are eerie, but they also vibrate with his own brand of beauty. I love his use of nature and the way he plays with shadow. In all of Meatyard's pictures there is an element of poetry and tragedy, almost like a story could be written for every photo.
